Diyoveya Honey Project
An initiative powered by Travel for Better in partnership with Wilderness Trust.

Where:
A newly acquired farm just outside of Maun, Botswana
Why:
To protect crops, empower communities, and support local biodiversity
What:
A community-based beekeeping project with high-impact outcomes

The Challenge:
In parts of rural Botswana, elephants regularly raid farms for food—destroying crops, threatening livelihoods, and increasing human-wildlife conflict.
The Solution:
Bees. Elephants naturally avoid them. So we’re placing Langstroth beehives around farms in strategic “bee fences.” These not only deter elephants but also help pollinate crops and produce honey—a triple win.

We Provide:
- Langstroth hives and supplies
- Professional training in beekeeping
- Mentorship and skill-building
- On-site honey processing equipment
- A guaranteed honey buy-back commitment from Wilderness
Farmers Gain:
- Diversified income from honey sales
- Improved crop yields
- A sustainable, non-lethal elephant deterrent
- Tools to launch their own micro-enterprises

Why it matters:
This is more than conservation. It’s community resilience, income generation, and a smarter way to reduce human-wildlife conflict. With each hive, we’re planting the seeds of long-term change.
A Note From Our Executive Director:
When I visited the first project site in the Okavango Delta in early April, I had the chance to sit with one of the farmers who’s been part of this program since the beginning. He stood beside his hives with quiet pride, explaining how the bees have not only protected his fields but also given him something more rare – stability.
This is why we started Travel for Better.
We’re not just funding projects. We’re backing people. We’re showing that travel – done right – can be a tool for conservation, for community resilience, and for local prosperity. The Diyoveya Honey Project is a model we believe in: it’s locally led, it’s grounded in science, and it works.
We’re proud to support this partnership with Wilderness Trust, and we’re just getting started.
